Grooming Large-Breed Dogs: What Big-Dog Owners Should Know

Grooming a Golden Retriever, a Bernese Mountain Dog, a Husky, or a big shepherd mix isn't just a bigger version of grooming a small dog. There's simply more coat to wash, brush, and dry, and a lot more dog to lift, steady, and keep comfortable. For many owners around Hagerstown and Washington County, that's exactly where home grooming starts to fall apart.
Why Big Dogs Are Harder to Groom at Home
- Getting a 70- or 100-pound dog into a bathtub, and back out safely, is hard on both of you, and slippery tubs are a common way for dogs to strain something.
- Thick double coats hold water deep near the skin. A big dog can stay damp for hours after a bath, and an undercoat that never fully dries is uncomfortable and can lead to skin irritation.
- Many large breeds blow their undercoat heavily in spring and fall. Brushing out that much loose fur at home can take far longer than most owners expect.
- Nail trims are a two-person job for a lot of big dogs, and long nails on a heavy dog put real strain on the paws and joints.
What Helps Between Grooms
- Brush a few times a week with an undercoat rake or slicker brush, working down to the skin rather than skimming the top of the coat.
- Pay extra attention behind the ears, under the collar, and on the back of the legs (the "pants" on breeds like Goldens and shepherds), where big dogs mat first.
- Check nails regularly. If you can hear them clicking on the floor, they're likely due.
- Keep the fur between the paw pads short, especially heading into wet or snowy months.
Big Dogs and Senior Joints
Large breeds tend to feel age in their hips and elbows sooner than small dogs do. Standing for a long groom can be tiring for an older big dog, so it's worth mentioning stiffness, arthritis, or any trouble with stairs when you call to schedule. A calmer, unhurried visit without long stretches spent waiting in a kennel can make a real difference for a big dog who's slowing down.
Large-breed owners regularly tell us their dogs are handled well and come home looking great, and our Funkstown salon has been grooming big dogs for more than 40 years in a cage-free setting. Whether your dog needs a full groom, a bath and brush-out, or a deshedding treatment to get ahead of a heavy coat blow, give us a call and we'll plan a visit that fits your dog's size and age.
